![]() Her father and the kingdom's army tried to fight them off, only to be defeated. On her 17th birthday (4th in the PC Engine version ), an evil army led by Death Adder invaded the Firewood Kingdom. Tyris was the former princess of the Firewood Kingdom, where she lived happily with her parents, the king and the queen. ![]() She also has great respect for the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead.Ī young Tyris with her parents, from Golden Axe (PC Engine version) In Golden Axe: Beast Rider, she values the Axirian Sisterhood more than anything else and would sacrifice her life for her sisters without a thought. Her Amazon training has made her tough and strong willed, and she is very skilled with a blade. The graphics are fairly slick, the combat seems varied and the beast riding appears to surpass that of the original by a considerable amount, so we look forward to taking on Death Adder at least one more time.Tyris is shown as a calm and collected woman. Slated for release this fall, Golden Axe: Beast Rider looks like it's coming along nicely. Nostalgic gamers will be delighted to know that the multicolored gnomes are still running around and have been joined by two new shades (green for health, blue for magic, yellow for loot and red for poison). These magical abilities appear similar to Tyris's original flame spells with the ultimate flame attack culminating in a flaming dragon spewing fire over the entire battlefield.ĭue to the focus on Tyris alone, there won't be any co-op play in Beast Rider, but it's something that the team is examining for future games. Magical attacks are performed just like in the arcade game, except that pressing the button multiple times will result in a higher-level magical attack. Counter attacks become available if you effectively parry or evade and cause increased damage and, in some cases, gory finishing moves. Similar to Viking: Battle for Asgard, attacks that can be parried will carry a blue glow while attacks that must be evaded (because they are too strong to block) will glow red. But for this first Beast Rider, Tyris will take center stage and perform her trademark sword maneuvers and fire magic.Ĭombat is designed as a bit of a dance, rewarding effective defense with improved offensive capabilities. For those of you that hoped to see Gilius the Dwarf and Axe Battler the macho barbarian, you needn't fret because they will have cameos in Beast Rider and have been promised more substantial roles in the future sequels. Golden Axe: Beast Rider will offer only one playable character: Tyris Flare, the amazon in the red bikini from the original Golden Axe. if you don't feed the Raptor enough, the creature will turn on you in order to slake its ravenous hunger. Raptors will attack anything, so it's up to you to plunge your sword into its back and guide it towards whatever will fill its belly with delicious meat. Cronoths are giant rhino-type creatures with the obligatory charge and stomp attacks, while Lynths serve as sneaky travel mounts due to their ability to turn themselves and their riders almost completely invisible.įinally, the Raptor has been described as a T-Rex with a scorpion tail that you don't so much ride as you hold onto for dear life. Miragars are among the burlier beasts, because they can enter an enraged state that enables them to literally tear other beasts in half (you may not want to know what happens to their poor riders). The remaining four new beasts all serve specialized functions and beast-spawning summoning stones ensure that you have a steady supply when their participation is crucial. That would be the Abrax, a raptor-looking dinosaur beast that both spits fire and can perform a spinning tail swipe. Five new monsters make up the new roster, with only one of those standing in for the three that appeared in the original game. The primary feature of Golden Axe: Beast Rider is, as the name implies, a wider selection of beasts to ride. ![]() With Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Sega hopes to re-invigorate through careful re-invention and a focus on one of the most popular aspects of the original series: striking down enemies from a powerful mount. Yet at some point (widely understood to be the home console-exclusive Golden Axe 3) the series faltered and lost all of its momentum and has been relegated to fond memories ever since. The original Golden Axe could easily be considered a seminal arcade classic, so the numerous ports to console over the years are understandable.
